Cat in a Cauldron - Free Pattern

 


Cauldrons and black cats are both Halloween staples, so why not combine the two? Celebrate the fall with this cute pattern!


Cat in a Cauldron

Materials

  • Yarn (I used Loops & Threads Soft Classic Solid yarn)
  • Crochet hook (I used a 4.5mm hook)
  • Safety eyes
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stuffing
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors

 

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • ch - chain
  • sc - single crochet
  • inc - increase
  • dec - decrease
  • hdc - half double crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • tc - triple crochet
  • ss - slip stitch
  • FLO - front loops only
  • BLO - back loops only
  • mc - magic circle
  • (...) - repeat the part in parenthesis specified number of time
  • (#) - number of stitches after finishing the round

 

Finished Size

5 inches tall from bottom of the cauldron to the top of the ears. May be different for everyone based on yarn thickness, hook size, and tension.

 

Pattern Instructions 

Cat Head

In black
1. 6 sc in mc (6)
2. Inc x6 (12)
3. (Sc, inc) x6 (18)
4. (2 sc, inc) x6 (24)
5 - 9. Sc around (24) (do 5 times)
10. (2 sc, dec) x6 (18) embroider nose over 1 stitch between rounds 7-8, and eyes in green over round 7, one stitch away from the nose on either side. Start stuffing
11. (Sc, dec) x6 (12)
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing


Cat ears (make 2)

In black
1. 4 sc in mc (4)
2. (Sc, inc) x2 (6)
3. (Sc, inc) x3 (9)
Fasten off, leave a tail for sewing. Do not stuff


Cat tail

In black
Ch 6, skip the first chain from the hook and do 5 sc down the chain
Fasten off, leave a tail for sewing



Cauldron

In dark grey
1. 6 sc in mc (6)
2. Inc x6 (12)
3. (Sc, inc) x6 (18)
4. (2 sc, inc) x6 (24)
5. (3 sc, inc) x6 (30)
6. (4 sc, inc) x6 (36)
7. (5 sc, inc) x6 (42)
8 - 16. Sc around (42) (do 9 times)
17. (5 sc, dec) x6 (36)
18. (4 sc, dec) x6 (30)
19. FLO (4 sc, inc) x6 (36)
Ss into next stitch then fasten off, leave a tail for weaving in


Brew Liquid

Attach green yarn to back loops left over from round 19 of the cauldron
1. Sc around (30)
2. (4 sc, dec) x5 (25) start stuffing the cauldron
3. (3 sc, dec) x5 (20)
4. (2 sc, dec) x5 (15)
5. (Sc, dec) x5 (10)
6. Dec x5 (5)


Attaching Parts

Start by sewing the ears to the sides of the top of the cat's head.


Next, sew the cat head to the edge of the brew liquid, looking over one side.


Next, sew the tail to the edge of the brew liquid opposite the cat head. You want to make it look like the body is hidden beneath the surface, with the tail poking up further away.

 

 Finally, you’ll make bobble stitches on the surface of the brew liquid to create bubbles. You can make as many as you’d like, but I did 3 for my cauldron. To learn how to do a bobble stitch, see my tutorial here!
