Chickadee - Free Crochet Pattern

 

This tiny bird pattern is based on a chestnut backed chickadee, but swapping out the colours can make it into whatever kind of chickadee (or other bird) is local to you! The colour changes can make it a bit tricky, so this pattern is more suitable to people who are comfortable with frequent colour changes. This pattern is very similar to my dark eyed junco pattern, so be sure to check that one out!


Chickadee

Materials

  • Yarn (I used Loops & Threads Solid Classic yarn, weight 4)
  • Crochet hook (I used 4.5mm)
  • Safety eyes
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stuffing
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors

 

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • ch - chain
  • sc - single crochet
  • inc - increase
  • dec - decrease
  • hdc - half double crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • tc - triple crochet
  • ss - slip stitch
  • FLO - front loops only
  • BLO - back loops only
  • mc - magic circle
  • (...) - repeat the part in parenthesis specified number of time
  • (#) - number of stitches after finishing the round

 

Finished Size

About 2 inches tall and 2 inches long. Size may be different depending on the brand and weight of your yarn, hook size, and tension.

 

Notes

 I use [dark brown] and {white} in the first half (rounds 1 to 7), then give instructions on how the rest of the colours are written.

Fasten off, use tail to close the remaining loops.



Wings (Make 2)

In dark grey

  1. 6 mc (6)

  3. Sc around for 2 rounds (12)

  5. (3 sc, dec) x2 (8)
  6. (2 sc, dec) x2 (6)

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing. Sew the hole closed.

 


Beak

 In grey
Ch 2


Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Attaching Parts

Sew the wings to the sides of the bird, going through a stitch on the body and then through a stitch on the side of the wing. Hold the wing flat against the body as you sew.






Attach the beak between the two white triangles. Also attach eyes on either side of the beak.
