Crocodile - Free Pattern


Crocodiles have been around for a long, long, long time! They're older than a lot of dinosaurs! While you're probably most familiar with the green North American crocodile, there's different species all over the world. Some crocodiles even live in salt water! Maybe you could make the nose extra long and make a gharial? Or any kind of crocodillian you want!

Materials

  • Yarn (I used Loops & Threads Soft Classic Solid yarn)
  • Crochet hook (I used a 4.5mm hook)
  • Safety eyes
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stuffing
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors

 

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • ch - chain
  • sc - single crochet
  • inc - increase
  • dec - decrease
  • hdc - half double crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • tc - triple crochet
  • ss - slip stitch
  • FLO - front loops only
  • BLO - back loops only
  • mc - magic circle
  • (...) - repeat the part in parenthesis specified number of time
  • (#) - number of stitches after finishing the round

 

Finished Size

5 inches long. May be different for everyone based on yarn thickness, hook size, and tension.

 

Pattern Instructions 

Body:

1. Chain 5, skip the first chain then sc 3, sc 3 in one stitch, then working on the other side sc 2, inc (10)
2 - 4. Sc around (10) x3
5. (Inc)x5, sc 5 (15)
6 - 10. Sc around (15) x5
11. Sc 2, (dec)x5, sc 3 (10)
12. Sc around (10)
13. Sc, (Inc)x2, sc 3, (inc)x2, sc 2 (14)
14. Sc around (14)
15. Sc 2, (inc)x2, sc 5, (inc)x2, sc 3 (18)
16 - 21. Sc around (18) x6
22. Sc 3, (dec)x2, sc 5, (dec)x2, sc 2 (14)
23. Sc around (14)
24.Sc 2, (dec)x2: sc 3, (dec)x2, sc (10)
25. Sc around (10)
26. (Sc 3, dec)x2 (8)
27 - 28. Sc around (8) x2
29. (Sc 2, dec)x2 (6)
30. Sc around (6)
Fasten off and close the hole.


Legs (make 4):

1. 6 mc (6)
2. Sc around (6)
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.


Spines:

Chain 9, skip the first chain then (ss, chain 2 and sc in the second chain) x7, ss
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.


Attaching Parts

Start by sewing the spines down the back of the body, being careful to keep it straight.



Then you can sew all 4 legs to the belly side, making sure they're lined up properly with the head.
