Axolotl - Free Pattern

 

Axolotls are so cute, so it only makes sense that they're popular right now. Since they're endangered and difficult to keep, it's illegal or impractical to keep them in a lot of places, so we'll have to make do with a crochet version! There's lots of different morphs out there for inspiration, or you can go nuts with whatever colour you want!


Axolotl

Materials

  • Yarn (I used Loops & Threads Soft Classic Solid yarn)
  • Crochet hook (I used a 4.5mm hook)
  • Safety eyes
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stuffing
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors

 

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • ch - chain
  • sc - single crochet
  • inc - increase
  • dec - decrease
  • hdc - half double crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • tc - triple crochet
  • ss - slip stitch
  • FLO - front loops only
  • BLO - back loops only
  • mc - magic circle
  • (...) - repeat the part in parenthesis specified number of time
  • (#) - number of stitches after finishing the round

 

Finished Size

4 inches long, including the tail. May be different for everyone based on yarn thickness, hook size, and tension.

12. BLO sc around (30) add face
13. (3 sc, dec) x6 (24)
14. (2 sc, dec) x6 (18) start stuffing
15. (sc, dec) x6 (12)

Gills (make 4)

In secondary colour
1. 6 mc (6)
2 - 4. Sc around (6) (do 3 times)
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing
Flatten opening and sew to sides of the head

Tail

1. 4 mc (4)
2. (Sc, inc) x2 (6)
3. Sc around (6)
4. (Sc, inc) x3 (9)
5. Sc around (9)
6. (2 sc, inc) x3 (12)

Tail fin

Attach yarn to a chain along the top edge of the tail with a ss, working toward the tip of the tail then along the bottom edge: hdc in each stitch

Attaching Parts

Simply sew the gills to the sides of the head, and the tail to the back end! Make sure the tail is vertical rather than horizontal.
