Unicorn - Free Pattern


Unicorns are always popular with kids, so I thought I'd make a pattern for one! It's relatively easy to make, so it's a great gift for any unicorn lovers in your life! You can choose to ignore the horn and make yourself a horse, too!


Unicorn

Materials

  • Yarn (I used Loops & Threads Soft Classic Solid yarn)
  • Crochet hook (I used a 4.5mm hook)
  • Safety eyes
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stuffing
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors

 

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • ch - chain
  • sc - single crochet
  • inc - increase
  • dec - decrease
  • hdc - half double crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • tc - triple crochet
  • ss - slip stitch
  • FLO - front loops only
  • BLO - back loops only
  • mc - magic circle
  • (...) - repeat the part in parenthesis specified number of time
  • (#) - number of stitches after finishing the round

 

Finished Size

4 inches tall and 3 inches long. May be different for everyone based on yarn thickness, hook size, and tension.


Pattern Instructions 

Head and body:

In white
1. Chain 6, skip the first chain, then sc 4, sc 3 times in one chain. Working on the other side of the chain, sc 3, inc (12)
2. Inc, sc 3, inc 3, sc 3, inc 2 (18)
3. Sc around (18) x3
4. Sc 7, dec 3, sc 5 (15)
5. Sc 5, dec 3, sc 4 (12)
6. Sc around (12) x2
7. Sc, chain 5, sc 4 down the chain then sc 11 on the neck piece (17)
8. Sc, sc 3 up the chain, sc 3 in the last chain, then sc 15 (22)
9. Sc 4, (sc, inc)x3, sc 12 (25)
10. Sc around (25) x4
11. (Sc 3, dec)x5 (20)
12. (Sc 2, dec)x5 (15)
13. (Sc, dec)x5 (10)
Fasten off and close the hole.


Ears (make 2):

In main colour
Chain 4
Ss, hdc, sc
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.


Legs (make 4):

In black
1. 6 mc (6) switch to white
2 - 4. Sc around (6) x3
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.


Mane:

In hair colour
Chain 6
Skip the first chain, then (ss, chain 2 then sc in the second chain)x4, ss
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.


Front hair piece (optional):

In hair colour
Chain 3
Skip the first chain, then ss 2
(Chain 2, ss in the second chain, then back in the base of the original chain)x2
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.


Tail:

In hair colour
Chain 6
Skip the first chain, then, ss, sc 4
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.


Horn:

In yellow
Chain 4
Skip the first chain, then ss, sc, sc
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.



Attaching Parts

Start by sewing the ears to the top of the head.



 Next, attach the legs to the bottom. Make sure you keep them evenly spaced.

Next, attach the mane to the neck. Check often to make sure it's on straight! You can also sew the front hair piece on now, if you chose to make it.



 Sew the horn between the ears.

 


Attach the tail to the bum.
